01/09/17 13:45
Innovate UK and the Medical Research Council (MRC) are to invest up to £12 million in new and novel healthcare solutions. There are 2 competitions for UK micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the latest round of the Biomedical Catalyst. These are for feasibility and early stage projects.
The biomedical catalyst has 4 types of funding awards designed to support small to medium enterprises (SMEs) that are developing a product or process. It shall help them progress from initial concept through to late-stage development. Each type of award has a different scope.
Feasibility studies
The aim of this competition is to support the development of innovative healthcare technologies and processes. These may include:
Projects are funded that explore and evaluate the commercial potential of innovative scientific ideas by:
Projects may range in size up to £200,000 and should last no longer than 12 months.
Early-stage projects
The aim of this competition is to support the development of technologies and processes including:
This is an early-stage competition. Projects will be funded that enable SMEs to complete a data package sufficient to support the subsequent testing of their product or process in a clinical setting (or other relevant environment). The early-stage project can include:
Projects should last between one and 3 years and range between £250,000 and £4 million.Total project costs can range between £250,000 and £4 million.
Both competitions close: Wednesday 11 October 2017 12:00pm
Feasibility studies
The aim of this competition is to support the development of innovative healthcare technologies and processes. These may include:
- disease prevention and proactive management of health and chronic conditions
- earlier and better detection and diagnosis of disease, leading to better patient outcomes
- tailored treatments that either change the underlying disease or offer potential cures
Projects are funded that explore and evaluate the commercial potential of innovative scientific ideas by:
- reviewing research evidence and identifying possible applications
- assessing business opportunities
- investigating the intellectual property position
- validating initial concepts or existing pre-clinical work through experimental studies
- identifying areas for further development
Projects may range in size up to £200,000 and should last no longer than 12 months.
Early-stage projects
The aim of this competition is to support the development of technologies and processes including:
- disease prevention and proactive management of health and chronic conditions
- earlier and better detection and diagnosis of disease, leading to better patient outcomes
- tailored treatments that either change the underlying disease or offer potential cures
This is an early-stage competition. Projects will be funded that enable SMEs to complete a data package sufficient to support the subsequent testing of their product or process in a clinical setting (or other relevant environment). The early-stage project can include:
- experimental evaluation (lab scale)
- use of in vitro and in vivo models (but not studies in humans or patients) to evaluate proof of concept and safety testing to appropriate regulatory standards
- exploration of potential production mechanisms
- early-stage prototyping
- product development planning
- intellectual property protection
Projects should last between one and 3 years and range between £250,000 and £4 million.Total project costs can range between £250,000 and £4 million.
