„German Funding“ here refers to funding programmes of the Federal Government, more specifically the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi). Depending on the funding programme, there are certain deadlines by which the application must be submitted, others are continuous. There is a suitable funding programme for most companies that conduct research and development. A very interesting programme for small (SME) biotech and pharma companies is the KMU innovative "biomedicine" programme described here.

One of the BMWK's ongoing programmes is the "Zentrale Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand" (ZIM) (Central Innovation Programme for SMEs). ZIM is a nationwide funding programme that is open to all technologies and sectors and is designed to meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. They can receive grants for research and development projects with technological innovation content and good market opportunities.

The „Forschungszulage“ (tax credits for R&D expenses) is an ongoing programme of the federal government. Any company subject to taxation in Germany may apply for a 25% research funding for personnel costs incurred in research and development (R&D) for the previous year, regardless of size, sector or profit. Likewise, research contracts awarded to third parties within the EU/EEA can be subsidised by 15%. For an initial overview, you may use our calculator.
